For sometime I had been getting the error "NTLDR is missing press 'CTRL' + 'ALT' + 'DEL' to restart" at bootup, however I was able to bypass it by logging into the recovery console and Fixmbr [ing] the MBR every time I restarted, which thanks to a constant stream of critical updates, I tended to do a lot. At this level the problem was manageable, so much so that I couldn't even be arsed to google for a fix.
Then my admin password stopped working in the recovery console, great now I really am fucked I thought. Not to worry I can simply install XP on my slave drive, use partition magic to re-size my master partition and then copy all the things I needed across to a second partition, format my main partition and reinstall XP. Simple enough, so I did it. spent ages copying everything across.
Then when it cam to the final part of the process, namely reinstalling my main operating system. I whacked my restore disc in (Emachines are to tight to give me a real disc) and let it run through.
When it booted up however something was wrong, instead of simply reformatting the partition and unpacking the image into it; the restore disc had deleted all partitions on my main drive and created itself a fat new one. God I bloody hate computers, I know, I am sorry you already know that you read the excerpt and the title, but you know I really do.
My computer, I specifically hate because it’s always Fucked. Normally however I can put up with the broken bits and muddle through, sometimes though it gets really broken and I have to format and reinstall Windows XP. This happened.
For sometime I had been getting the error “NTLDR is missing press ‘CTRL’ + ‘ALT’ + ‘DEL’ to restart” at bootup, however I was able to bypass it by logging into the recovery console and Fixmbr [ing] the MBR every time I restarted, which thanks to a constant stream of critical updates, I tended to do a lot. Feel free to rant, computers can be a rantable subject! No really, don’t hold back, Oh you didn’t, Cool!
Don’t you just love em’?
Just when you think it’s safe to leave them to their own devices, everything’s going well then…..Zappo! You’re in cybershit, It’s thrown a mental! Everything goes to pot and how the hell did you cope without your computer, the internet and e-mail before anyway?!
Happy Surfing Dude!
I know how you feel, a lot of people say that but few do. Here is my last 10 days and you might beleive me.
I work alone for myself, getting started with my own online business. I have every penny I have tied up in it, work every hour god sends and as yet there is still away to go before I get my cash back…if at all :)
About 10 days ago, my latest hard drive, 80g maxtor, to replace the last bugger that crashed with a terrible click and bang taking about 3 months work and recepits, details and god know what with it, decided to join its old buddy.
Just this time not with a bang or a crash just a sneaky “innaccesible boot device”…..
No problems, just load it as a slave and get my stuff off. I’ve seen all this before. Ah maybe not, cannot load drive, at all..will not mount full stop.
Innacessible boot device as master
Corropt or missing ntfs.sys as slave…
Hmmmm crash me thinks. But Again ?? god damn maxtor poo !! Run a check on the disc, loaded DOS bootable floppy to check hard drive, 2 hours laters, drive is fine not a problem.
A few sleepless night laters it turns out I had a faulty ram slot that was going out the nasty way. Slowly and quietly and corrupting the ntfs.sys file on its way…
OK drive gone, big deal, I have a brand new WD 250G slave with an entire 40g backup of everything, my business, websites, work, products, etc etc etc.
So complete new 80g WD drive, installed, formated, even partioned so windows can sit on its own and have no one bothering it…
Great….all hunky dory, only lost about a week diagnosing all this and getting it sorted. Now just got another 2-3 weeks as I resintall the 142 programs I use and 40g of data to be put in the right places..
No probs though, at least I got it all on my 250g slave…
Ill just do a defrag to take extra special care of everything. C fraged, D fragged, just frag my 250g slave and we done.
“connection to engine lost”….
“services.exe. corrupted please run chkdsk…
OK ….odd but shit happens, run that.
Deleting orphan files 1…then 2…then 33..right the way to 179,985…yes pretty much my whole god damn drive….
I sat is a state of panic….could of pulled the plug at 20,000 really, but what was the point, drive aint gonna mount without running a chkdsk anyways…
Moment of truth, reboot open slave and empty……i feel sick…
Oh hold on there a few “found files here”….
You ready for this…
Only file out of over 250g to have survived was Get Data Back NTFS and serials….?????
Luck, irony or sick coincidence….virul ??
still feeling sick i run that for 4 hours just to sit then look at a usless colleciton of junk files while being made to watch as all my file names whizz pass my eyes with “index NOT added” attached to them…..(unrecoverable so it seems)…
I aint angry, I aint sad….im lost.
Yeah I have a story very similar to that involving a viao laptop and its recovery partition. Perhaps another post..
P.S. Thats the longest comment I have ever had, so thanks
Simple advice to you: Get a mac.
